Missing or ignored variables

“FRONTEND_URL must be set”, “APP_ORIGIN is required”, or a variable your app doesn't see.

A required variable is missing

What you see

Your app's output says Error: FRONTEND_URL must be configured, APP_ORIGIN is required, DB_CONNECTION must be set, or a value is undefined.

Why

Your app reads a variable that the project doesn't have. Your local .env file isn't uploaded or committed, so its values don't come along.

Fix

Add the variable in the project's Variables tab (or paste your whole .env), then Redeploy.

For addresses, use your app's real one, like https://my-app.dockhosting.cloud. APP_URL is set to it for you.

I changed a variable but nothing changed

What you see

The new value doesn't show in your app.

Why

A running app keeps the variables it started with, and frameworks like Next.js and Vite bake NEXT_PUBLIC_* and VITE_* into the build.

Fix

Press Redeploy after changing variables. It rebuilds, so build-time variables update too.

The linked database's value is ignored

What you see

The app connects to the wrong database, or to localhost, although a database is linked.

Why

You set DATABASE_URL (or a DB_* variable) yourself. Your own value always wins over the linked database's.

Fix

Delete your own DATABASE_URL / DB_* in Variables and redeploy. See Database connection.

Names are exact

FRONTEND_URL, frontend_url and FRONTEND_URL (with a space) are three different variables. Copy names from your code.
